EDITORIAL 5: Staying safe in this online and physical semester.

Welcome to the new semester, beautiful queens. This semester will be the first of its kind as the management has declared the semester an online and physical semester. Due to the incidence of the coronavirus at different locations on the university campus, this directive of the management has become the best way to cope with the reemergence of the virus with a new variant.

As students with the primary aim of acquiring knowledge, we should make sure to be safe as we go about our daily activities. These are few but important measures to be taken so as to reduce the occurrence of the virus.

Stay away from crowds.

The environment we are in may call for more socialization than normal. Google meet and zoom even the live option on different social media platforms can serve as effective alternatives to meeting physically, especially when a lot of people are expected to attend the meeting.

Wear your face mask.

It might be incredibly comfortable and it might make your mouth area sweaty, but all these mild discomforts are nothing next to the horrible implications of being a victim of the virus. Though you might not look like you have the virus and the friend you are talking to also might not look like he has the symptoms, but you can never be too sure as there are people who have the virus but show no symptoms, asymptomatic people. This will cause a problem as asymptomatic people can still spread the virus to other people. Wear your mask and be safe.

Keep hands clean.

Wash your hands as frequently as possible. The University has made this possible as sinks with running taps have been made available at different halls of residences and at different buildings, situated strategically at entrances and exits to ensure you can enter with clean hands and leave with clean hands.

In a situation where you are unable to wash your hands, alcohol based hand sanitizers should be your go to. Alcohol based sanitizers are very common and are not expensive. For #250 you can own at least a 50 ml bottle of alcohol based sanitizer.

Report any covid case, immediately.

Once you see someone with symptoms of the virus, report to the health care Centre. For you to be able to notice the symptoms you have to stay up to date with the covid-19 trends. Being up to date will let you know about the virus' variants, the steps taken by virologists to control the virus and updates on the virus' vaccine.

If you see anybody showing signs of having the virus, it is best to report to the Jaja clinic regardless of if you know the person personally or if the person is against you alerting the health clinic.

Idiaites, having the virus is not a death sentence. You can still get better, but in order to do that you need qualified doctors and nurses to tell you how to. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of the semester.
